This is a relatively new test. Impedance monitoring can identify reflux of non-acidic or mildly-acidic material, which doesn’t appear on acid studies but also causes symptoms. Your doctor may recommend this for a number of reasons including difficulty diagnosing the cause and failure of medication to eradicate symptoms. It is particularly helpful in throat symptoms and cough.
This test is more expensive to perform than 24 hour pH (acid) studies but is quite ‘state of the art’.
- Similar to acid studies, testing is performed over a swallowed tube.
- Wheeze bronchospasm
- Voice trouble (scratchy, hoarse, weak)
- Shortness of breath
Impedence monitoring may also be used to test how effectively reflux medications are working.
The Test Detects
- Mild acid
All of these can contribute to reflux symptoms.
